The infrastructure, explained

This is not a list of recommendations. It is a series of explanations of what you see on the road: what it is, what it does, and what you ought to know.

Start with any one of them. There is no particular order.

How to read any road

You need not learn everything at once. There are three questions you always ask, wherever you happen to be.

When you enter a road you do not know, you begin with the kind of road it is. That is the most important thing to know, because it settles the rules that apply to it, the speed you may reach on it, and the things that are not permitted there.

Then come the signs. You need not read every one — you need only find the one nearest to you. Often the rest are there to inform other people.

Finally comes context: the weather, the traffic, the hour. This is the part that cannot be learned from this site or from any other page. It depends on the day.

Another way in

If the work of engineers interests you, look at the bridges — it is the clearest place to see the decisions that have to be made.
